Laureus Sporting Moment

The Laureus Sports Awards 2020 were recently held in Berlin and as a proud Indian, I had to write about the recognition bestowed by Laureus for it’s best sporting moment in the last two decades(2000-2020). Through this piece of reportage I would like to look back at the journey that eventually resulted in the winning moment with Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar on the shoulders of his teammates as a part of the victory lap at the Wankhede Stadium in 2011.

There were many a slip between the ‘cup’ and the lip and how India became World Cup Winners after 28 years on their home soil. There was drama early on in the group stage when India had a last ball tie with England but managed to make the quarter finals. Under the astute leadership of M.S Dhoni and Gary Kirsten, the South African coach of the Indian team, there was a pivotal change made in the playing eleven in the quarter finals by replacing Yusuf Pathan with Suresh Raina and it was exactly the tonic needed for the knockout stage of the tournament. Yours truly was a part of the semi finals by being watching it live in Mohali when India met Pakistan in the semi finals and the respective Prime Ministers of the two countries being in attendance. Who can forget the iconic moment when M.S Dhoni hoisted the winning six in Mumbai or not to forget Yuvraj Singh playing the role of an all-rounder to perfection suffering from Cancer btu still coming up trumps with bat and ball culminating in the picture for the Lareus Sporting Moment  as the “Carried On The Shoulders Of A Nation”
