After All, You’re My Wonderwall

First, the reason for writing a blog on a weekday and not the weekend is because I follow a blog on WordPress and it said that the blogger would give open topics for interpretation every day to write on. Yesterday, it was a joke and today the topic is open. Open for me is the outdoors and nothing to beat the outdoors with physical exertions not for recreation but for the sheer thrill of competing and winning. This brings me to my favorite sports franchise Manchester United. I wake up to my wife and my kid but before all this, I used to follow the Red Devils as my true love ever since 2001, even before Ronaldo came by when Roy Keane used to hold the fort in midfield(I even have his T-shirt from the time -16). I would like to associate open, the topic, with sports, with Manchester United being the sports fanatic that I am and take this opportunity to reminisce about Man United’s victory over Manchester City at the Etihad on 03/11/19.

Peter Schmeichel at the Etihad through the telly

As you can see from the image, Peter Schmeichel is at the Etihad through the telly when I still had TVs and not stream 1000 GB of data at 150 Mbps every month thanks to my family which includes my wife, my son and my parents. Peter has in his backdrop, the Man United away supporters who were the only ones left in the stadium and it is a pity Wonderwall wasn’t played that day. It is an oxymoron because the heading belongs to my favourite band Oasis even though Noel Gallagher, the band’s erstwhile lead guitarist, is a die-hard Cityzen. Oxymoron or dichotomy? For the record, United won 1-2 with Rashford and Martial scoring while Otamendi replied for the hosts when the game was done and dusted. Proud to add that we did the double on City when the season was curtailed.

I shudder to think about what football might look like in the foreseeable future or the lack of it given that United was on an upswing before the enforced break and Bruno Fernandez was a god-sent, cathartic transfer that is all about what United stands for. I’d like to keep my opinion for another day by leaving you with the lyrics of Wonderwall by Oasis-

Today is gonna be the day
That they’re gonna throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

Backbeat, the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I’m sure you’ve heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don’t know how

Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they’ll never throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you’re not to…
